Vietnam, a heroic nation with a rich 4000-year history, has experienced numerous ups and downs in the process of nation-building and defense. Each period in the nation’s history, from Van Lang – Au Lac, Ngo, Dinh, Tien Le, Ly, Tran, etc., has contributed to the historical legacy with heroes, outstanding talents, and many renowned stories, allowing generations of Vietnamese to take pride in their origin.
Fondly cherishing and valuing history, the high school TDSers of The Dewey Schools Tay Ho Tay have conceived the idea of recreating a historical story through the form of a stage play. With their determination and initiative, these students have realized this idea in a play project titled “Dinh Bo Linh: The Reed Hero”, adapted from the well-known historical narrative “Dinh Bo Linh Suppresses the 12 Rebel Warlords.”
The play depicts the story of Dinh Bo Linh, the king who founded the Đinh Dynasty. He is credited with suppressing the rebellion of the 12 warlords and becoming the first king to unify the country after 1000 years of Northern domination. He named the nation Dai Co Viet and established the capital in Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh.
The historical play is an outstanding and largest interdisciplinary learning project of the year, involving nearly 100 actors from middle and high school, along with a team of event organizers comprising up to 50 individuals. The project integrates various subjects such as literature, history, geography, music, performing arts, visual arts, humanities, IT, MDE, etc. Particularly noteworthy is the complete translation of the script into English, realizing the aspiration to bring Vietnamese history closer to the international friends of Dewey School students.
Participating in this project, students have the opportunity to experience and enhance their capabilities in various roles such as director, scriptwriter, actor, stage set designer, sound and lighting technician, media and external relations, simultaneous interpreter, finance, and accounting, among others. Through the process of “seeing, thinking, and doing,” TDSers will master knowledge and insights drawn from their direct experiences, a depth of understanding that no curriculum alone can provide.
In addition, the project serves as a platform for TDSers to demonstrate care and share responsibility with the community through volunteer activities. Accordingly, TDSers will allocate 20% of the total project funding to contribute to the charity fund: “Industrial stoves for remote areas.” This is a project within the “Nourish a Children” ecosystem, aimed at sponsoring industrial stoves and gas canisters for schools in difficult-to-reach highland areas where teachers still use traditional wood stoves to cook meals for students.
With great dedication and creativity from TDSers, the project promises to deliver unforgettable experiences for the audience. Let’s look forward to the performance of the play “Dinh Bo Linh: The Reed Hero,” a meaningful and exciting event.
