Armed with nothing more than a plastic bottle, layers of sand, gravel, activated charcoal, and a passion for science, campers at Global Explorers Camp spent last week building their very own water filtration systems!

Guided by their teachers, students carefully arranged each layer of material to create a multi-stage filtration system. Gravel trapped larger debris, sand filtered finer particles, while activated charcoal absorbed odors and impurities. Even more exciting, the entire activity was conducted in English. Vocabulary such as gravel, sand, and clean water was no longer something to memorize from a textbook—it became a natural part of hands-on experimentation and teamwork. By the end of the lesson, campers had successfully transformed murky water into clear water while confidently applying both scientific concepts and English communication like real young researchers.

Alongside the experiment, campers also experienced Dewey’s hands-on, inquiry-based approach to learning. Starting from a real-world challenge, they learned to observe, form hypotheses, test their ideas, and explain scientific phenomena through evidence and critical thinking. Every experiment, big or small, became an opportunity to nurture curiosity, inspire exploration, and deepen their understanding of the world around them. The classroom transformed into a dynamic learning space where students were encouraged to ask questions, discover answers independently, and build lasting knowledge through observation, experimentation, and authentic experiences.
