Do you think Math class is just about dry numbers?
“Set X has four members,
a, b, c, and e.
a can only change shapes,
b can only change colors,
c can change both shape
and color too.
e is quite strange,
for it does nothing new!”
This fun little rhyme, created by Dewey teachers, served as the “secret code” for the Math lesson in class 5Dodoma. Some parents might wonder, “Why do a and b change colors?” At The Dewey Schools, Math is transformed into a magical stage where every student gets to become a true “math magician”!
Instead of just doing standard addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, students experienced an unexpected and creative Math lesson—working with elements that aren’t numbers!
This time, the “stage” was a geometric universe, where the elements of Set X were familiar shapes: circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. With colorful puzzle pieces as their “props,” students didn’t just learn about sets, elements, and operations—they actively manipulated, classified, and applied logical thinking to real geometric objects right in front of them.
Learning, playing, and creating at the same time, each operation felt like a “magic trick” that allowed students to transform sets, arrange elements, and analyze patterns in a smart and visual way. Abstract concepts suddenly became easier to grasp and more engaging than ever!
Math is more than just numbers. At Dewey, it’s a journey of discovery—one that sparks curiosity, enhances problem-solving skills, and encourages logical thinking, starting with even the smallest lessons!
