INTRODUCTION

The Dewey Schools exemplify the designing of schools where a positive attitude towards learning and friendship is ignited in each student. The fundamental mission of the school is to cultivate the student’s character development and to serve the community with commitment. We highly value inquiry, impact and innovation in education, along with the focused vision and mission in creating the global influences.

The Dewey Schools inspire students to explore themselves and the potential opportunities in the world around them. We create the learning experiences with and for the students, connecting the essential skills to the real-world opportunities and the future possibilities. We believe that our students, the little people, do have big ideas, and we hope to empower them to make a difference in our world, now.

I love how the children learn Literature here. They have the projects where they are challenged to write essays and work in groups to do research and presentations. The learning trips give them first-hand experiences and a better understanding of the classroom lessons and therefore, result in a good memory. With self-learning and self-working practices, the children take ownership of the lessons naturally.
The learning method here is very different from that in other schools where the teacher speaks, students take notes and try to memorize, so the students do not get their real feelings of the work and their memory of the lessons is not sustained.

I’ve witnessed how my child is making academic, communicative and social progress every day. The “Learning by doing” strategy gives him real world experiences through learning trips where he and his friends compose literary work, poems, paintings. They get to study STEAM and sciences where they try out experiments and create the products by themselves. Some products are put up for sale to contribute to the charity fund. I think these values are much greater than what they receive from only textbooks, as they give our children enriched souls and a sense of responsibility to the world around them.

The first time I attended the seminar “I learn by myself” of Grade 4 students, I was overwhelmed and fascinated by the presentation of their products.
The children did their own presentations with confidence and when it came to the Q&A session, other children raised straightforward questions, some even dug really deep into the subject matter. What I found most exciting was the drama, which required coordinated efforts from the children. They wrote the script, rehearsed together and prepared the props themselves.

I love Maths the most because our teachers created numerous activities that make the lessons really fun and easy to understand. I and my friends participated in many projects where we applied knowledge into real life situations.

Our teachers are very friendly and dedicated to supporting us in class. What I love most about them is the positive energy they instill in us in every lesson, which makes our school days really stimulating and fruitful.

I was deeply impressed and tremendously challenged by the commitments and vision identified by the Dewey Schools leadership: changing Vietnamese education by developing and providing to students world-class learning experiences. Dewey was transparent and prudential in making sure that all the practices within the school system are consistent in response to the Council of International Schools (CIS) requirements. This will undoubtedly bring the best learning experience to the students.

I’m delighted to be offered an opportunity to work with Dewey on building school culture and environment. The questions that we’ve been tackling are: How can we stand up to the international standards while retaining our local spirit? We build a school system of strong reputation for not only outcomes but also human being principles. Because it’s human, not programs and plans, that drives culture.

We highly appreciate the pioneering efforts of the Dewey Schools System in integrating the Aqua-tots survival swimming program into the curricular program. We aim at giving children survival lessons with which they know how to stay safe in an aquatic environment, and can swim longer without using too much energy. If getting started from early years, they will have an easier start and gain more physical, spiritual and emotional outcomes.
