Art has the remarkable ability to transcend borders, preserving culture while building connections between people from different backgrounds. For Lee Junsung (10 Burlington), art became a heartfelt tribute to his Korean heritage and the experiences that have shaped his identity while living and studying in Vietnam.
His award-winning artwork beautifully recreates Gwanghwamun Gate, one of Korea’s most iconic historical landmarks. Rather than presenting the monument as a simple architectural model, Junsung captures its timeless grandeur through meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful details. From the elegant curves of the traditional tiled roof and the carefully constructed stone arches to the authentic Korean calligraphy decorating the surrounding walls, every element reflects deep cultural appreciation.
To transform his vision into reality, Junsung devoted nearly three weeks to creating the piece by hand. Using foam board for the main structure and wooden sticks for the beams, pillars, and intricate architectural details, he carefully finished the model with acrylic paint to recreate the monument’s authentic colors and textures. The result is a work that not only showcases impressive technical skill but also demonstrates remarkable patience, precision, and dedication.
Beyond celebrating the beauty of Korean architecture, the artwork poses a thought-provoking question: While we celebrate the beauty and significance of our cultural heritage and identities, how do we truly honor and preserve them through the way we live each day? Through this message, Junsung encourages viewers to look beyond admiration and reflect on their personal role in carrying cultural values forward.
