After high school’s gate, the journey to prestigious Universities is always a long one that requires a suitable roadmap along with Students’ intelligent strategies. Understanding the struggles of Students in the scholarship search and university application process, Dewey Career & University Counseling Office organized a seminar: “How To Stand Out Admission” to help TDSers start smoothly on the journey to conquer their dream universities.
During the seminar, Students had the opportunity to meet and listen to insights shared by Ms. Emily Parliman – a Former Member of the UC Berkeley Admissions Committee. At the same time, TDSers also received extremely useful information such as:
- Early personalized roadmap development: Understanding how to create a plan tailored to their interests, goals, and aspirations starting from Middle and High School.
- Exploration of academic and extracurricular strategies: Understanding and having appropriate direction in selecting courses, extracurricular activities to build a profile that showcases individual uniqueness.
- Secrets to getting scholarships: Building a strong profile to score points and potentially win scholarships from top universities worldwide.
Through the seminar, TDSers actively posed questions to Ms. Emily such as “What should I prepare to make our application stand out from others?” or “Will having diverse extracurricular experiences in various fields be a plus?”. In response to the concerns of the TDSers, Ms. Emily shared the “key” to building an effective personal profile to successfully impress the admissions committee: “4 important factors that make your application stand out, including: GPA; leadership ability, and diversity and consistency in activities within the application persona.”
In particular, Ms. Emily emphasized the Leadership factor: “It’s not necessary for you to hold the position of president or vice president of a club to demonstrate leadership qualities. You can share with the admissions committee activities that demonstrate your management skills, organizational abilities, or teamwork spirit such as guiding and assisting others to showcase your leadership qualities.” This message helps TDSers understand and be more confident in choosing suitable extracurricular activities.
