At Dewey, English is more than just a school subject. It is a tool that enables students to communicate with confidence, access knowledge, conduct research, explore global issues, and express their ideas across increasingly diverse contexts.
Vietnam Debate & Public Speaking Championship 2026 – VDPS 2026 – is designed to put those abilities into a real academic challenge.
In collaboration with SocioLogic, The Dewey Schools is bringing together students from Grades 4–12 across Vietnam for a nationwide English Debate and Public Speaking competition. The competition follows internationally recognized formats, including the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) format for Debate, as well as Original Oratory and Impromptu Speaking based on National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) standards.
Strong English skills alone are not enough in this arena. Students need to listen carefully to understand different perspectives, find relevant evidence to support their arguments, respond under time pressure, work effectively with teammates, and decide which ideas matter most when persuading an audience. In Impromptu Speaking, thinking and speaking happen almost simultaneously. This is where English truly becomes a tool for thinking.
For Dewey students in particular, VDPS is also an opportunity to bring the skills developed through English Literature, Humanities, research, projects, and classroom discussions into a new context — one where they must apply their knowledge independently, respond to unpredictable situations, and make decisions in real time during debate and public speaking rounds.
VDPS also gives TDSers the chance to meet teams from other schools and engage with a wide range of perspectives and communication styles. Before the competition, participants will take part in specialized workshops. After each round, feedback from judges will help them reflect on their performance, make adjustments, and apply what they have learned in the next round.

These are some of the key reasons why Dewey is organizing VDPS 2026. The Organizing Committee believes this experience will help students become better listeners and thinkers, strengthen their critical thinking, grow more confident in expressing and defending their ideas in English, and gain a clearer understanding of how effectively they can use English in both learning and everyday life.
