“They’re only in Grade 7, but their academic knowledge and social awareness are almost at the level of what we had back in university!” shared Ms. Hằng My, parent of a Grade 7 Ghent student, after attending one of her child’s classes. This special classroom experience is part of the Open Day week, offering parents the chance to join their children’s lessons and share the joy of exploring knowledge together.

Many parents attending the event were astonished by TDSers’ academic research abilities and English fluency. Students approached global literature and history through project-based learning. Especially impressive were the Grade 5 students, who came up with community-minded inventions such as a volcano disaster prediction robot, a medical-assistance robot, and a rescue device for overturned boats during floods. Meanwhile, TDSers’ critical thinking and social awareness were vividly demonstrated in humanities research topics like gender equality, abuse, and violence against women.

“I wish I could go back to being a student just to experience learning like this!” — was the heartfelt remark shared by many parents after the sessions. “At Dewey, English isn’t just a subject—it’s a tool for exploring a wide range of disciplines. My child’s learning goes far beyond dry grammar and vocabulary; it connects to history, science, and real-world contexts. What I value most is how each project allows students to grow according to their unique personalities, passions, and interests,” emphasized Ms. Hằng My, parent of Grade 7 Ghent.

The second week of Open Day will continue from November 5 to 7—parents, don’t miss the opportunity to join, observe, and experience the creativity of TDSers firsthand!

Open Day is an annual event at The Dewey Schools, held in celebration of educational reformer John Dewey’s birthday. His philosophy of “learning by doing” serves as the guiding compass for all teaching and learning activities at Dewey. The event also acts as a meaningful bridge connecting the School and parents in their shared journey to nurture students’ holistic growth.
