During the rainy season in Nghia Tam commune, Van Chan district, Yen Bai province, there are still small feet wading through streams to reach the classroom. The road is difficult, and though those little feet are covered in mud, they remain determined on their journey in pursuit of knowledge. It is this resilience and desire to learn that inspired the Dewey Tay Ho Tay Community Fund to launch the project “Supporting Children’s Steps to School.”
Nghia Tam commune is home to a population in which 65% belong to ethnic minority groups. Harsh natural disasters and treacherous terrain have made life increasingly difficult for local residents, especially for students. With a mission to bring love, compassion, and support to help improve the lives of people in this region, the “Supporting Children’s Steps to School” project focuses on two key activities:
Building a bridge in Tinh Luat Hamlet – Nghia Tam – Van Chan – Yen Bai
To facilitate daily travel, residents had previously built a makeshift bridge using concrete pipes, connecting Tinh Luat hamlet with Hop Nhat hamlet. However, during the stormy season, rising water levels often flood or even wash away the bridge. Adults must wade through streams to get to work, while students struggle through the water just to attend school. On days when the current is too strong and dangerous, children are forced to stay home.
Understanding these hardships, the project aims to construct a sturdy and permanent bridge to help make the path to school safer and more accessible for the children. The project is set to be carried out with an estimated budget of 185 million VND.
Building a New Restroom Facility for Nghĩa Tâm Primary School – Văn Chấn, Yên Bái
For many years, Nghĩa Tâm Primary School has had to rely on a single, small restroom facility that is now showing significant signs of deterioration. During the rainy season, the restroom becomes damp and unhygienic, posing risks to students’ health and affecting their daily routines. A new, clean, and well-equipped restroom will be a practical and meaningful gift, helping to improve learning and living conditions for both students and teachers. The estimated budget for this project is nearly 35 million VND.
Drilling a clean water well for Nghia Tam Primary School – Van Chan – Yen Bai
With over 360 students, including 50 who stay in the school dormitory during the week, Nghia Tam Primary School has long relied on a single small well for its water supply. During the dry season, the well’s water volume is insufficient to meet daily needs, making both education and healthcare for the students more challenging. A larger drilled well would be a practical and meaningful gift, providing a clean and safe water source for teachers and students alike. The project is planned with an estimated budget of 35 million VND.
Education is not only a journey of acquiring knowledge but also one of nurturing compassion, empathy, and a spirit of sharing. At The Dewey Schools, every charitable initiative is a valuable opportunity for students to participate, gain experiences, and grow. On this trip, Dewey students will directly accompany the bridge construction effort, engage with students at Nghia Tam Primary School, and take part in interactive activities, sharing meaningful spiritual gifts and building lasting connections.
Every step the children take toward school becomes more steady and secure with the support of kind-hearted individuals. The Dewey Schools Tay Ho Tay warmly calls for the contribution and partnership of our beloved parents. Every donation serves as a powerful motivation, helping us realize this meaningful project.
