As part of our commitment to fostering international student exchanges and strengthening cross-cultural connections, The Dewey Schools were delighted to welcome a delegation of students from Kansai Okura Middle & High School, Japan, for a special visit and cultural exchange.
On the first day of their visit, the Kansai Okura students had the opportunity to participate in International Day – one of Dewey’s largest interdisciplinary projects of the school year. During the event, they delivered presentations on Japanese culture, sharing insights into their country’s cuisine, customs, and traditional arts. In return, TDSers confidently introduced a cultural symbol of Vietnam: the palm-leaf conical hat. The exchange continued with a fascinating introduction to Mizuhiki knot tying, a refined and meaningful aspect of Japanese artistry, presented by the Kansai Okura students.
In the afternoon, students from both schools collaborated in a vibrant handicraft activity. Each palm-leaf conical hat was decorated with colorful patterns, while each Mizuhiki cord was intricately knotted into exquisite shapes – all reflecting the dedication and spirit of cultural exchange between the two schools.
In addition to cultural exchange activities, students from Kansai Okura and TDSers engaged in dynamic discussions on a project titled “The Ideal School.” This provided an opportunity for them to share their perspectives on educational models and learning environments they aspire to while also developing critical thinking and teamwork skills.
“The students here are incredibly friendly, helping us feel at home right away. I was truly impressed by the school’s modern facilities and the strong bond between students and teachers. The atmosphere at Dewey feels so open and lively – almost like a festival! This has been a fantastic opportunity for us, as somewhat reserved Japanese students, to make friends with our Vietnamese peers. Thank you for organizing such an amazing program!” shared Yuna Mizuno, a student from Kansai Okura Middle & High School, Japan, after the exchange session.
Through this program, students from both schools not only broadened their cultural understanding but also enhanced essential skills such as critical thinking, planning, and problem-solving in a collaborative environment.
International exchanges have always been a key focus at The Dewey Schools. These experiences allow TDSers to refine their communication skills, gain global knowledge, and share the beauty of Vietnamese values with international friends. Dewey firmly believes that each encounter is a new journey – one that opens doors to knowledge and lasting friendships!
