Creating scented candles using mathematical formulas?
Applying spatial geometry to product design?
Mathematics is not just about dry numbers or formulas on paper – it can be applied to real-world, creative activities! The grade 5 math project, “Small flame, distant fragrance,” is a perfect example, offering TDSers a unique learning experience: crafting their very own scented candles.
In this project, students not only explore the candle-making process but also apply mathematical concepts at every step. From determining ingredient ratios and calculating burn time to blending fragrances harmoniously, each task requires precision in mathematical calculations. Students utilize formulas for mass, volume, and mixing ratios to ensure that every candle achieves the perfect balance of shape, color, and scent.
Beyond that, spatial geometry concepts come to life as students calculate the dimensions and shapes of their candles – ensuring not only aesthetic appeal but also safety in use. Through experimentation and refinement, TDSers gain a deeper understanding of material optimization, burn efficiency, and the art of creating unique designs.
The “Small flame, distant fragrance” workshop became even more meaningful with the participation of parents. They were not just observers but active partners, working alongside their children in the candle-making process. The scented candles, crafted together by students and their parents, became heartfelt gifts for their beloved women on the occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8).
Mr. Bui Tuan Anh, a parent, shared: “Stepping into this workshop felt like entering a real laboratory. What impressed me the most was how the students worked in teams – discussing, experimenting, and refining their ideas to create a finished product. I hope the school continues to organize such meaningful projects, helping students approach knowledge in a practical way while gaining valuable hands-on experiences.”
The “Small flame, distant fragrance” project not only deepened TDSers’ love for mathematics but also inspired them to apply their knowledge creatively in everyday life. Let’s take a look at the unique scented candles handcrafted by our grade 5 students!
