It is no coincidence that Nguyen Xuan Anh Hoang , a 12th-grade student in the Discover program at The Dewey Schools Tay Ho Tay, is affectionately referred to by the University and Career Counseling Office as “the young man devoted to a single dream.” Throughout his three years of high school, Hoang remained focused on one destination: the British University Vietnam (BUV). He did not apply to any other university, showed no hesitation, and made no detours, he placed all his trust, effort, and aspirations into one single path.
This determination did not stem from impulse but was the result of a meaningful journey that began with a university experience trip to BUV organized by the school in Grade 10. From that point onward, Hoang began taking concrete steps to turn his dream into reality. These included earning an IELTS score of 7.5, participating in business and finance competitions, and thoroughly researching academic programs, especially the Finance program in partnership with the University of London, one of the most competitive majors at BUV.
A young man with a simple way of thinking but who consistently leaves a lasting impression through his sincerity, Hoang has, year after year, grown into one of the most active and resilient student leaders at Dewey. He was once an enthusiastic member of the Media Club and participated in the Vietnam Youth Leadership Initiative program for young leaders. In Grade 12, Hoang made a remarkable leap forward by founding and serving as Vice President of the Dewey Business Venture Club. He also successfully organized the Dewey Business Plan Competition, which attracted over 50 business-minded students from across the school.
Hoang’s contributions didn’t stop there. He was also one of the inspiring speakers at TEDx The Dewey Schools, where he delivered a powerful talk on the importance of effective communication in modern life. He has consistently earned accolades such as “Student of the Month,” “Student Exemplifying the Four Core Values,” and numerous sports awards. Each of these experiences has not only helped Hoang develop leadership and management skills but, more importantly, has shaped his confidence and resilience, qualities that contrast sharply with the shy student he was when he first joined Dewey in Grade 8.
“The Career Fair at Dewey was the moment I realized that I didn’t just want to study business, I truly wanted to pursue finance,” Hoang shared. “It was thanks to a conversation with Uncle Quang, a parent and an expert in the industry, that I came to understand how essential financial knowledge is for anyone aspiring to become a future investor. Dewey gave me the opportunity to become better every day. Here, I was empowered and encouraged to try things I had never thought of before. The teachers are incredibly supportive, especially those in the University and Career Counseling Office, who guided me extensively throughout my application process to BUV. The advice that stayed with me the most was: “Instead of worrying about what you can’t control, focus on doing your best with what you can”.
Winning the prestigious Dean’s Scholarship from BUV is a well-deserved reward for Hoang’s journey of consistent effort and purposeful determination. The true value of the scholarship lies not only in the financial support it provides, but more importantly, in the recognition and encouragement it represents for his unwavering dedication. His teachers firmly believe that this young man, with a special love for the UK, will continue to write a brilliant next chapter at BUV over the next four years, with his persistence, sincerity, and relentless effort.
