Leaving behind the familiar classroom, the Literature lesson for Dewey’s 8th and 9th graders took place amid the rustic Northern countryside. Instead of observing still images in textbooks, students immersed themselves in a full day of farming at DeTrang Farm (Ba Vì, Hà Nội). This activity is part of Dewey’s outdoor learning project, designed to spark curiosity, deepen cultural understanding, and nurture students’ love for nature.

The earthy scent after rain, the fresh green of a newly washed garden, and the lively chorus of birds set an inspiring tone for the students’ learning journey. Excitement filled the air as they tried their hands at pottery making, shaping bánh trôi, and preparing bánh cuốn. Knowledge about farm operations and animal care also came alive through visits to the organic vegetable garden and the goat, horse, and ostrich farms. Many students were especially thrilled to try milking goats or riding horses for the first time. Each experience not only brought joy but also offered meaningful lessons about the simple, hardworking life of farmers, helping students develop a deeper appreciation for the value of labor.

Students also had the chance to explore the traditional beauty of ancient Xứ Đoài culture. They touched time-worn laterite walls, admired age-old architecture with mossy tiled roofs, rustic straw stacks, and bright terracotta courtyards. These moments allowed them to fully absorb the poetic charm and tranquility of rural life in Vietnam.

The trip to DeTrang Farm provided students with an opportunity to actively explore knowledge beyond textbooks, connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences. Through hands-on activities, they strengthened their observation, communication, and teamwork skills. At Dewey, stepping into the world to see, feel, and experience is also a way to cultivate empathy. Those simple, genuine emotions drawn from everyday life will become the nourishment that allows their love for literature to grow and flourish.
