Career Counseling at The Dewey Schools: A Comprehensive and Personalized Process

Over the course of four school years, the University and Career Counseling Office (UCCO) at The Dewey Schools builds strong, lasting relationships with each student and their family to help identify the most suitable university for every individual. This process is facilitated through academic and university counseling, which focuses on developing a detailed, flexible, and collaborative plan to ensure students’ long-term success. The career counseling program is designed comprehensively with five spiraling components:

  • Career education: Equipping students with knowledge and insights into various industries and future career pathways.
  • Career counseling: Providing personalized support to help students identify their strengths, interests, and career goals.
  • Career exploration experiences: Creating opportunities for students to engage in real-world experiences that offer deeper insights into careers of interest.
  • Academic planning aligned with career goals: Guiding students to develop an academic plan based on their interests and career aspirations, laying a solid foundation for future success.
  • University application support: Assisting students in preparing competitive university applications, including standardized testing and extracurricular activities aligned with their goals.

Grade 9 is a pivotal stage where students begin exploring their identities and understanding the structure of high school. The UCCO supports students by:

  • Self-discovery and career awareness: Guiding students to explore their interests, strengths, and potential career fields.
  • Introduction to the university application process: Familiarizing students with the basics of university admissions and key terminology.
  • Subject group selection: Assisting students in selecting academic plans that align with their personal interests and long-term goals.
  • Assignment of a dedicated college counselor: At the end of the school year, each family is matched with a dedicated college counselor to ensure ongoing and personalized support for both academic and career planning.
