Career Counseling at The Dewey Schools: A Comprehensive and Personalized Process
Over the course of four school years, the University and Career Counseling Office (UCCO) at The Dewey Schools builds strong, lasting relationships with each student and their family to help identify the most suitable university for every individual. This process is facilitated through academic and university counseling, which focuses on developing a detailed, flexible, and collaborative plan to ensure students’ long-term success. The career counseling program is designed comprehensively with five spiraling components:
- Career education: Equipping students with knowledge and insights into various industries and future career pathways.
- Career counseling: Providing personalized support to help students identify their strengths, interests, and career goals.
- Career exploration experiences: Creating opportunities for students to engage in real-world experiences that offer deeper insights into careers of interest.
- Academic planning aligned with career goals: Guiding students to develop an academic plan based on their interests and career aspirations, laying a solid foundation for future success.
- University application support: Assisting students in preparing competitive university applications, including standardized testing and extracurricular activities aligned with their goals.
Grade 9 Career Counseling Roadmap
Grade 9 is a pivotal stage where students begin exploring their identities and understanding the structure of high school. The UCCO supports students by:
- Navigating the assessment system and building confidence: Helping students understand grading systems and the impact of advanced courses on GPA, empowering them to make informed academic decisions.
- Self-discovery and career awareness: Guiding students to explore their interests, strengths, and potential career fields.
- Introduction to the university application process: Familiarizing students with the basics of university admissions and key terminology.
- Subject group selection: Assisting students in selecting academic plans that align with their personal interests and long-term goals.
- Assignment of a dedicated college counselor: At the end of the school year, each family is matched with a dedicated college counselor to ensure ongoing and personalized support for both academic and career planning.
Grade 10 Career Counseling Roadmap
Grade 10 is a key time for students to explore opportunities and lay the groundwork for future academic and career success.
Experiential activity participation and personal growth: Students are encouraged to engage in school activities and build deeper connections with the community, enhancing personal development, communication, and collaboration skills.
College and career list development: With guidance from counselors, students:
– Explore and identify career fields that align with their interests, strengths, and goals.
– Begin compiling a list of potential universities based on academic and career direction.
– Develop a detailed university preparation plan to ensure readiness for future admission requirements.
Grade 11 Career Counseling Roadmap
In Grade 11, students begin to focus on shaping their personal brand and clarifying their university goals. The UCCO supports students with:
One-on-one college counseling: Each student works closely with a dedicated counselor to create a detailed roadmap for university planning, including identifying intended majors and target universities.
Personalized university research: Based on individual interests and aspirations, students receive tailored lists of potential universities along with guidance on how to meet specific admission requirements.
Comprehensive application preparation: The UCCO helps students:
– Define academic and career goals.
– Prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT and other important elements in the application documents.
– Address specific requirements of each university to ensure complete and compelling applications.
– Take part in events and meet university representatives: Students have opportunities to attend university fairs and meet with representatives from approximately 100 universities, gaining firsthand insights and building direct connections.
Grade 12 Career Counseling Roadmap
Grade 12 is a crucial stage where students complete their university applications. The UCCO provides comprehensive support throughout this process, from finalizing application materials to developing the essential skills needed to meet the specific requirements of each target university. Every student follows a detailed, personalized application plan to ensure progress is maintained and all deadlines are met.
Personalized application timelines: Each student follows a customized timeline to ensure they stay ahead of deadlines. Regular 1:1 meetings with college counselors help students stay on track and prepare thoroughly for upcoming milestones.
