The excitement and thrill are palpable in “Math in Dewey”, a mathematics competition organized by members of the “Math Funtastic Crew (MFC)” club. What sets “Math in Dewey” apart is that students are fully involved in every aspect, from ideation to the execution of the entire competition.
With the aim of providing an engaging platform for high school students, “Math in Dewey” becomes a place where TDS-ers come together to meet, interact, and share their passion for mathematics. Through youthful and creative thinking, the typically dry mathematical formulas are transformed into easily digestible knowledge through real-life problem-solving scenarios. “Math in Dewey” offers a completely fresh perspective on mathematics, aiding TDS-ers in developing design thinking skills and applying learned knowledge to real-life situations.
According to To Nhu Y (class 11 Berlin), the president of the Math Funtastic Crew club, the competition doesn’t induce stress among participants. On the contrary, everyone feels a sense of camaraderie, enjoying moments of exploration and conquering challenges throughout the program.
Officially kicking off on May 3rd, “Math in Dewey” brought forth an atmosphere hotter than ever with the lively competition among 4 contestants: Thach Do Quang Anh (grade 10 Budapest), Pham Quang Minh (class 11 Berlin), Le Hoang Minh Ngoc (class 10 Sophia), and Nguyen Nhat Anh (class 11 Monaco). Through three rounds of competition: warm-up, acceleration and finishing, with a total score of 34, contestant Pham Quang Minh (class 11 Berlin) brilliantly surpassed his “energetic” opponents to claim victory.
Sharing his joy after clinching the overall victory, Quang Minh wore a radiant smile: “Although there were some tough questions, overall, they were all topics I love. I hope that Math in Dewey will be organized on a larger scale because this competition is definitely worth trying!”
The Dewey Schools’ motto of “learning by doing” is evident throughout all activities, including encouraging and facilitating students to organize competitions themselves. This fosters a proactive learning spirit and enhances the creative thinking abilities of TDSers.
