With no desks, no blackboards, and no chalk, outdoor classes have become a familiar image at Dewey.
With the theme “Units of Measurement,” 4Quito held an exciting math lesson right in the schoolyard. The class was divided into four groups, each tasked with measuring the playground area, describing it, and completing a design drawing titled “My Dream Playground.” Instead of a dull theoretical lesson filled with dry numbers and formulas, the students transformed into little engineers, eagerly playing with numbers.
The May sun of summer did not dampen the enthusiastic learning spirit of the young students. Each student had a role, some carefully measured the length of the playground, others read the measurements, and others sketched the design. Despite the beads of sweat forming on their foreheads, every group remained highly focused, working harmoniously together, determined to complete their task early and win the competition.
Ms. Monabelle Timosa, the math teacher for 4Quito, shared: “Through this lesson, students learn practical measurement skills, solidify their understanding of the length measurement unit table, and learn how to convert measurement units. Group activities also provide an opportunity for the children to enhance their sense of teamwork, support, and help each other in their studies.”
Nguyen Dai Quang, a student of 4Quito, shared: “I really enjoy outdoor math lessons like this. I hope there will be more lessons like this to inspire me to learn more.”
