The Dewey Schools take pride in honoring five outstanding students from Dewey who have been selected to advance to the final round of the international academic competition, the World Scholar’s Cup, achieving remarkable success with eight gold medals and nine silver medals across individual and team categories.
Bui Khanh An – 6Halifax
Vo Nguyen Dang Nhan – 6Halifax
Pham Bao Khanh – 6Halifax
Nguyen Sinh Phu – 5Boston
Nguyen Huong Thao Nguyen – 6Montreal
Surpassing thousands of formidable competitors in the group stage held in Thailand and South Korea, these students advanced directly to the finals hosted at Yale University (USA) in November. In this competition, students underwent a three-day process, completing four rounds, including Team Debate, Scholar’s Bowl, Collaborative Writing, and Scholar’s Challenge. With challenges encompassing skills, knowledge, and team spirit, the competition demanded young scholars showcase not only linguistic and academic prowess but also a broad understanding across various societal domains.
Closely following her child’s competition journey in the United States, Ms. Do Thi Khanh Van, the parent of Bui Khanh An, a 6Montreal student, reflected, “This is a journey worthy of investing time and financial resources for my child. Through the competition, my child has self-discovered her abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, becoming proactive in communication and daring to set ambitious goals. These are invaluable lessons that parents may find challenging to convey fully unless she experiences them directly. The six-year journey at Dewey has equipped my child with the ability to use language proficiently and engage in deep critical thinking on any topic. Additionally, Dewey is a school that fosters a culture of friendly and respectful friendships, facilitating my child’s quick connection and interaction with international peers.”
Sharing his experience participating in the competition in the United States, Dang Nhan expressed, “To prepare for the competition, my friends and I dedicated three hours every week for practice. Despite the fatigue, I learned many new things. During this journey, I felt more independent as I competed without my parents by my side. My fellow contestants and I learned to support and assist each other, even though we came from different countries and had different religions. The moment of holding the Vietnamese flag on stage alongside 40 representatives from around the world made me and my friends feel extremely honored and proud.”
The World Scholar’s Cup is not only an academic competition but also a place where students have the opportunity to meet and culturally interact with international friends, sharing knowledge and different perspectives on life. Additionally, it serves as a platform for TDSers to apply and enhance critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities through the application of design thinking, one of the effective learning methods currently implemented at Dewey.
Congratulations to the 5 Dewey “warriors” for an unforgettable journey in the United States and for achieving remarkable accomplishments at the World Scholar’s Cup 2023. The Dewey Schools believe that behind every effort of TDSers is the steadfast guidance and enthusiastic support from your parents and teachers. We hope that TDSers will continue to reap many sweet fruits of success in their journey ahead!
