Recently, at The Dewey Schools, TDSers successfully organized the Model United Nations (DMUN) with the participation of over 70 Students from 13 Middle and High schools in Hanoi, such as: Hanoi – Amsterdam, British International School, The Olympia Schools, SenTia Schools, Vinschool the Harmony… MUN is an intellectually challenging event designed for Students and scholars worldwide. As a simulation of a United Nations assembly, it offers Students the opportunity to “role-play” as delegates representing various nations, engaging in discussions and proposing solutions to pressing global issues.
Under the theme “Clockwork Diplomacy: Steering the Hands of Time,” Delegates explored the interconnection between the past, present, and future to address issues that have spanned generations. With over 50 Delegates, 20 Organizing Committee members across 3 Councils, everyone engaged in 5 sessions over 2 days to deliberate, engage in active diplomacy, and foster consensus on global issues.
Within the framework of this DMUN, participating delegates engaged in discussions on 3 topics:
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF): Ending the issue of Child Marriage
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP): Reducing reliance on global automotive industry in the present and future
United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC): Combating racial discrimination against ethnic minorities
Through deliberating on these issues, Students had the opportunity to experience, express their viewpoints, and broaden their knowledge about international affairs or persistent global challenges. Additionally, Students developed skills in critical thinking, argumentation, and public speaking, preparing them to integrate and confidently become global citizens. This is the mission of the Dewey Model United Nations program.
Vu Nha Uyen – 8Canberra shared her impressions after the event: “The preparation time for DMUN brought many challenges and uncertainties as it was my first participation in such a conference. But conversations with everyone during breaks helped me make new friends, learn from seniors, and feel comfortable during the conference. Despite being the first time organizing, TDSers demonstrated professionalism in planning and execution, maintaining a relaxed and open atmosphere for all delegates to express their opinions. DMUN provided valuable experiences and lessons that no other event could offer.”
TDSer Vu Nha Uyen – 8Canberra had a memorable time at DMUN.
The discussion sessions were incredibly dynamic with speeches and debates filled with evidence, information, and eloquent expression, displaying confidence and skillful interweaving of humor by both delegates and chairs. Through the conference, three TDSers excellently achieved awards at this year’s DMUN. These accolades serve as clear evidence of the maturity and deep understanding of global issues among TDSers.
