In the context of rapid technological advancement, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data are driving waves of powerful innovation. As part of the early-year career orientation events at The Dewey Schools, the demo class “How Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Shape our lives” attracted significant interest from middle and high school TDSers. Not only did it help students stay updated with the latest tech trends and allowed them to experience an Information Technology specialty class at the University of Melbourne – one of Australia’s most prestigious universities.
The class was designed to replicate a university lecture hall setting, with nearly 150 students participating. It offered TDSers a dynamic and immersive perspective on university teaching methods and class content. Led by Professor Shanika Karunasekera, Head of the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne, TDSers explored the remarkable advances in AI technology, the mechanisms behind AI and Big Data, and the latest, trend-leading technology applications. Complex academic concepts, such as artificial intelligence and deep learning, were conveyed through engaging and specific examples, making them accessible and lively.
A highlight of the seminar was the lively discussion between TDSers and the speaker about recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on everyday life. Students posed intriguing and timely questions, such as AI’s potential to replace human roles, the development of AI models capable of distinguishing misinformation, and issues surrounding security and privacy.
In addition to technological insights, the class also opened up career opportunities for TDSers. Professor Shanika shared insights into the continuous global growth of the IT industry, especially noting high demand in Australia. “Hot” career paths such as programmer, systems administrator, software engineer, and IT technician are increasingly in demand. The University of Melbourne offers a diverse and in-depth curriculum, covering areas from computer science and software engineering to data analytics, providing a solid foundation for students pursuing careers in modern technology.
Do Phan Truong An (10Edmonton) shared: “Through the demo class, I not only gained a deeper understanding of academic concepts but also developed a broader perspective on future technology careers. The session helped us prepare mentally and academically to make informed choices about our future specializations.”
By implementing experiential learning models, The Dewey Schools not only provide knowledge but also inspire and ignite students’ passion for learning, while building a solid foundation for them to confidently navigate their career paths.
