Who Are Global Citizens? Global citizens are individuals who possess knowledge of global issues on local, national, and international scales; they understand the interconnectedness and interdependence between different nations and peoples. One of the global issues is “Identity and Diversity,” which teachers at The Dewey Schools have skillfully integrated into the History lesson “Roman Shield Crafting Practice.”
Identity and diversity are reflected through the culture and history of different peoples
In the lesson, Grade 10 TDSers engaged in hands-on practice by creating Scutum – the distinctive shield used by Roman soldiers, one of the essential pieces of equipment in battles. The students crafted the shields using recycled materials, shaping them into curved surfaces and painting them in symbolic red. They were decorated with characteristic motifs such as lightning bolts and eagles – Jupiter and the Roman army symbols. Through this activity, students not only explored the tactical aspects employed by Roman generals but also gained a deeper understanding of the cultural and religious significance of the Roman Empire.
Combining video activities that reenact Roman army battles, History for TDSers has transformed from dry events into a vivid picture of the culture of various peoples and its influence on the organization of modern societies.
“The hands-on session was just one of the lessons where we explored the fascinating historical story of the ancient Roman Empire. The lesson I took away is that the Roman Empire expanded not only through military strength but also by its ability to collaborate and assimilate values from many cultures like Greece, Egypt, and Persia. This helps me understand that, in the age of globalization, international cooperation and respect for cultural diversity are key to solving global issues. Additionally, the Roman shield – symbolizing collective protection – reminds me of the importance of solidarity, just like how we need to come together to address global challenges. I also learned that the resilience of Roman soldiers is a valuable lesson in never giving up and remaining steadfast in the face of adversity,” shared Phuong Anh, a student from 10Montreal class, with deep appreciation.
From knowledge to skills required for a global citizen
These essential skills are regularly honed by TDSers across all subjects and learning activities. In this History lesson, TDSers worked in groups to discuss and present their perspectives on ancient wars, thereby building their critical thinking skills and learning from one another.
A key part of the lesson was the “Super Shield Challenge” game. Students took on the role of army leaders, using the shields they crafted to protect themselves and their teammates on the battlefield. This game not only deepened their understanding of the strategic role of the shield in Roman defensive tactics but also offered an opportunity to develop communication, collaboration, leadership, and empathy – skills crucial for becoming global citizens.
Through experiential learning, TDSers recognize that each culture, nation, and even individual has their own unique identity. They learn to respect differences, not only in the past but also in the present and future, within the wider community around them. A global citizen is not only equipped with knowledge and understanding but also with the skills of empathy, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and respect for diversity. This enables them to act confidently, effectively, and responsibly.
