“Differentiated instruction is not about personalizing lessons for each student; rather, it involves utilizing a variety of teaching methods combined with diverse learning tasks that suit the students’ abilities in the class. This approach helps spark interest, maximize thinking, and nurture students’ creativity,” affirmed Ms. Shaina Neal, Academic Director of The Dewey Schools Tay Ho Tay Elementary English Program.
To help parents gain a deeper understanding of the teaching methods and look fors for the 2024-2025 school year, The Dewey Schools (TDS) organized a workshop on Differentiated Instruction – a modern and effective teaching approach being applied at TDS.
Unlike typical workshops, this event provided parents the opportunity to participate in group activities and discussions around the concept of differentiated instruction. Through these activities, parents learned that this approach is based on the varying abilities, interests, and learning needs of each student, enabling students to fully realize their potential. This interactive experience not only helped parents grasp the concept more clearly but also fostered an engaging and connected atmosphere among parents.
Mr. Joseph David Benoit Drouin, Academic Director of the Middle and High School English Program, addressed these questions: “Our teaching approach is centered on differentiating content (providing materials suited to each ability level), differentiating process (employing various learning approaches), and differentiating assessment (offering a range of assessments such as practical exercises and presentations). This method not only enables students to master the content but also builds soft skills like critical thinking, teamwork, self-learning, deeper comprehension, and fosters creative thinking.”
