“The black pencil in my painting represents the hardships my father has been through, while the candle symbolizes my father. I chose pencil because it’s not too vibrant, allowing me to clearly express my father’s struggles and sacrifices.” – Gia Huy (5Dodoma) shared about his artwork “The Happy Candle” at the “Voice of the Hands” exhibition.
With the aim of fostering connection and deeper understanding of students’ inner worlds, the “Voice of the Hands” exhibition created a deeply emotional artistic space, where 5th graders showcased their creative works from an interdisciplinary project combining Literature Vietnamese and Visual Arts. Each painting is not just a harmonious blend of colors and lines but also carries genuine stories and heartfelt reflections—innocent yet profoundly meaningful.
In Visual Arts, students learned painting techniques, composition arrangement, and color usage to create aesthetically refined artworks. Meanwhile, in Literature Vietnamese, they explored how to express emotions through imagery and compared visual arts with other art forms.
Drawing inspiration from their own stories – moments with family, cherished memories with friends, unforgettable journeys, and encounters with those less fortunate – students boldly stepped out of their comfort zones to express their emotions through art. The exhibition was not only an opportunity to appreciate beauty but also a chance to listen to one another through a unique language: the language of art and emotion.
80 paintings – 80 stories – 80 unique perspectives. Each piece carried a personal imprint, reflecting both the artists’ rich inner worlds and their daring creativity. This was a space where painting met words, where every brushstroke and every shade of color became the most sincere storytelling of life as seen through their eyes.
Parent Nguyen Thi Thuy Huong shared her heartfelt thoughts: “As I admire these works, I feel immense pride in the dedication and meticulous effort poured into every stroke, every word. The children have transformed emotions into images, thoughts into stories, creating pieces that truly touch the hearts of viewers. Each painting is a fragment of their soul, a glimpse into their dreams, aspirations, and deep reflections on life. They have proven that when hands and hearts beat as one, art has the power to connect and spread love in its own beautiful way.”
The Dewey Schools hopes that after this exhibition, students will continue to nurture their love for art and language, exploring the world with a sensitive heart, observant eyes, and creative hands.
Because art is not only found on canvases – it is also present in the way we love, share, and appreciate life.
The “Voice of the Hands” exhibition is still on display at Lobby E, The Dewey Schools Tay Ho Tay. We warmly invite parents to admire the heartfelt creations of our young artists and relive the memorable moments from the exhibition’s opening day!
