On the journey to “set sail into the vast ocean,” understanding your own goals and preparing thoroughly for what lies ahead is always a crucial first step. Recently, the Career & University Counseling Office at The Dewey Schools hosted three Mini University Fairs right on campus at TDS Tay Ho Tay. Students from Grades 10 to 12 had the valuable opportunity to meet face-to-face with 43 university representatives from leading institutions across the U.S., Australia, and Canada, including the University of Pittsburgh, Binghamton University, Queen’s University, Simon Fraser University, and more.
At the fair, students engaged in meaningful conversations with admission officers—the people who know best about the application process, requirements, and unique cultures of each university. They received up-to-date information on majors, campus life, and scholarship opportunities, along with insider tips on writing compelling personal essays, building strong applications, and presenting themselves confidently to admission committees.
One fascinating takeaway? Each country has its own distinct “style” of recruiting talent. In the U.S., admissions teams often focus on personal essays that tell a unique story and strong extracurricular involvement. Australia places more emphasis on academic performance—especially GPA—and a clear sense of academic direction.
These mini fairs were not just events—they were launchpads. They offered TDSers a chance to connect, reflect, and strategically prepare for their future study abroad plans. Early preparation—self-discovery, skill-building, achievement development, and informed academic choices—can make all the difference when it’s time to “knock on the doors” of the world’s top universities.
