“Unique, Rigorous, and Fun. We are always encouraged to deeply explore everything, go beyond basic knowledge, and apply it to real life to create positive change in the world.” (Levi, 10Edmonton)
“I used to be very hesitant about writing essays and giving presentations, but now I’ve become more confident, improved my English skills, and developed other essential soft skills.” (Cao Khoi, 10Burlington)
Two students from The Dewey Schools shared their reflections about their learning experiences during the seminar on the Adventure International and IB MYP Programs.
“Our family plans for our child to attend a U.S. university after graduating high school. That’s why we chose the Adventure International Program, with the expectation that our child will earn an American high school diploma from the partner school, Mount Vernon School. I highly value this program for its globally recognized standards and qualifications. Moreover, a year of study abroad in the U.S. will certainly help our child adapt better to the international environment before entering university,” said Parent Do Ngoc Hoang.
The Adventure International Program is designed and delivered based on U.S. educational standards, offering AP courses from Grade 10 to Grade 12, with AP Pre-Calculus (Grade 11) being a mandatory subject. This outstanding feature provides students with the opportunity to earn college credits and enhances their competitive edge when applying to U.S. universities. Dewey students engage with a curriculum similar to that of native students through courses transferred from The Mount Vernon School, such as Humanities, Science, MDE, Performing Arts, etc. The academic program emphasizes interdisciplinary connections to build a strong foundation of deep understanding. For instance, in Humanities, students not only learn language skills through analyzing books or novels but also explore historical, cultural, and social contexts.
Interdisciplinary Learning (IDU) is also a key component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, renowned for its rigorous academic demands and high level of challenge. For example, in Grade 6, students are challenged to think critically through a circular process: conducting experiments and gathering data in Science, analyzing data tables in Mathematics, and then using the results to write reports in Science.
Highlighting the unique aspects of the program, Mr. Michael Leonard, IB MYP Coordinator, shared: “The IB emphasizes the question, “What are you going to do to create a better world?” and empowers students to contribute to their communities through the Community Project in Grade 9, the Personal Project in Grade 10, and the long-term CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) project in Grade 11. Students think at a university level, reflecting on their roles, their actions, and the impact each project or initiative can have on the world.”
These projects not only bridge academic knowledge with real-life application but also help students develop empathy, social responsibility, an understanding of global issues, and essential skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These are key attributes that university admissions committees worldwide highly value in applicants.
