How do university students approach Chemistry? How does a university laboratory differ from a high school lab? What makes the learning environment at one of Vietnam’s top universities so special?
These questions inspired the 10Edmonton TDSers to step out of their familiar classroom setting and embark on an exciting new learning experience at the Marie Curie Club, Faculty of Chemistry, Hanoi National University of Education.
Under the guidance of Ms. Pham Thanh Nga, a Master’s degree holder and senior lecturer in the Faculty of Chemistry at Hanoi National University of Education, the students had the opportunity to explore modern experimental equipment and tools. They conducted hands-on experiments on acids and bases, discovering how to identify acidic and basic solutions through chemical reactions and gaining a deeper understanding of their properties.
“The Dewey students were very enthusiastic and proactive in participating in experiments alongside their peers and the lecturers here. I truly appreciate their eagerness to learn and their open-mindedness. Although some parts of the experiments were beyond the scope of their current curriculum, they still asked thoughtful questions and worked diligently to complete the tasks,” shared Ms. Thanh Nga.
Notably, the experiment on determining pH levels in polluted water samples sparked both empathy and design-thinking skills in the TDSers, as they proposed several environmental protection solutions. From theoretical knowledge, they extended their learning to real-life applications, demonstrating how chemistry can be used to address practical problems.
TDSer Le Ha Thu Anh (10Edmonton) shared: “Visiting the Chemistry Laboratory of the university was a fascinating and valuable experience. It allowed us to familiarize ourselves with new scientific equipment and conduct experiments to ‘enhance’ our understanding of the subject. This was truly an exciting trip for me and my friends.”
The trip offered not only valuable scientific experiences but also inspired the TDSers to foster a spirit of exploration, creativity, and a sense of responsibility for the environment.
