Inspired by a classic work
Originating from a childhood passion for writing, Annalise Lily Rosenheart, a young girl, came to her 15-year-old pupil, Le Nam Khanh An (10 Budapest-The Dewey Schools Dương Kinh), with simplicity and sweetness.
“Under the Streetlight” was initiated by the author Charlotte Elley (Le Nam Khanh An) on February 11, 2024. Inspired by the story of the boy Rémi and the old man Vitalis in Hector Malot’s work “Sans Famille” (Without Family), the initial sketches of Annalise Lily Rosenheart appear modestly; she is a lost little nightingale separated from her family after a fire, spending the following four years living with the impoverished teacher Carrisford Jamieson.
“I believe it’s time for me to return to you the things that you rightfully deserve. I may not be able to return you to your blood relatives, your kin, but I believe I can leave you here, where you can live happily with Mr. and Mrs. Rosehood and their children. You are an intelligent girl who needs careful nurturing. I have nurtured and loved you since the moment you stood waiting for me outside the classroom door one day. I have nurtured and loved you regardless of any blood ties between us. It’s easy to accept and love someone like oneself, but to love someone different, that’s truly difficult. Annalise, you’ve made me do this, but my dear, you are a Lily flower, you deserve to live under the protection and care reserved for a Lily flower. You must stay here.” Under the Streetlight – Charlotte Elley, 2024.
The journey of creating a first work
As the spiritual child nurtured over three months, “Under the Streetlight” holds a very special significance for Khanh An. Annalise embodies simplicity, the ups and downs of that student’s life.
Reflecting on the journey from penning the first words to locking the final sentences of “Under the Streetlight,” Khanh An asserts that her abundant yet straightforward inspiration stems from the very “living dolls” – the 8 students of class 10Budapest (The Dewey Schools, Duong Kinh, Hai Phong) along with their homeroom teacher, Ms. Tran Thi Thu Loan, wonderful companions of An at school.
Embedded within the work is the joy derived from life’s simple pleasures, the 15-year-old student of The Dewey Schools, Duong Kinh, hopes that Annalise will bring to readers of “Under the Streetlight” moments of serene simplicity, innocence, and purity.
